Maruti Suzuki’s first ever electric car e Vitara unveils with over 500km of range
Maruti Suzuki has officially revealed its first all-electric SUV, the e Vitara, in India. Set for a March 2025 launch, the e Vitara will compete with the Tata Curvv electric, Hyundai Creta EV, MG ZS EV, and the Mahindra BE6. The SUV closely follows the eVX concept that debuted in 2023, staying true to its bold, futuristic design while offering two battery pack options. A Toyota twin, the Urban Cruiser EV, has also been showcased and is expected to launch later in the year.
Battery Pack, Performance & Motor
The e Vitara is built on a skateboard platform (codenamed 40PL), which has been co-developed with Toyota. It will be available with two battery options: a 49kWh unit and a larger 61kWh pack. Both use Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) blade cells from BYD. The 49kWh version is powered by a 143hp motor, while the 61kWh variant delivers 173hp; both produce 192.5Nm of torque. While Maruti hasn’t disclosed the official range figures yet, it claims that the larger battery will provide an MIDC-rated range of over 500km. Charging infrastructure is a major focus, with Maruti announcing its ‘e for Me’ strategy, which includes fast chargers at dealerships in the top 100 cities, a dedicated EV charging app, and over 1,500 EV-specific service centers across 1,000 cities.
In terms of design, the e Vitara retains a muscular, upright stance, though some elements from the concept such as sharp creases and large alloy wheels have been slightly toned down. It rides on 225/55 R18 tyres, giving it a strong road presence. Measuring 4,275mm in length, 1,800mm in width, and 1,640mm in height, the SUV features tri-slash LED DRLs at the front and rear, a charging port positioned on the front left fender, a bulging rear wheel arch, and a C-pillar-mounted rear door handle. Maruti claims the e Vitara has a turning radius of 5.2 meters, ensuring good maneuverability in urban environments. It will be offered in ten color options, including four dual-tone schemes.
Interior and Features
Inside, the e Vitara’s dashboard takes a fresh approach, differing from existing Maruti models. A floating 10.25-inch infotainment screen dominates the center, complemented by a 10.1-inch digital instrument cluster. The two-spoke, flat-bottom steering wheel, rectangular AC vents with brushed silver accents, and physical climate control buttons add to its modern yet functional appeal. The upholstery features a mix of fabric and leatherette, enhancing comfort and style. Feature highlights include an electronic parking brake with auto hold, three drive modes (Eco, Normal, Sport), single-zone automatic climate control, a wireless phone charger, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, ventilated front seats, and a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat. The rear seats offer a 60:40 split and reclining function for added flexibility.
Safety Features and Pricing
On the safety front, the e Vitara comes equipped with seven airbags and Level 2 ADAS, featuring adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring.
Maruti Suzuki is set to announce prices in March 2025, but the e Vitara is expected to compete within the Rs 18-27 lakh range, aligning with rivals like the Mahindra BE 6 (Rs 18.90-26.90 lakh), Tata Curvv electric (Rs 17.49-21.99 lakh), and the MG ZS EV (Rs 18.98-25.75 lakh). Production will take place at Suzuki’s Gujarat plant, with 50% of the units allocated for export to Japan and Europe. With the e Vitara, Maruti Suzuki takes a major step into the EV market, blending performance, efficiency, and technology into a competitive package. More details, including official range figures and pricing, will be revealed closer to its launch.
